Tax Dollars For A Stadium?

Let's face reality South Florida is no baseball town. The Marlins will never get the fan base it seeks, and continuing with the construction is a mistake. The use of tax dollars to build a stadium in the middle of nowhere is ludicrous, especially when our schools budgets are taking dramatic cuts. The money used to build the stadium is coming from tourism tax dollars. Thats money that can be used to pump into public schools in a time when it is needed the most.

Alright yes the Marlins have 2 championships but they have never been able to sustain a fair fane base to generate revenue. The reason which many used that it was due to not having a permanant home is a poor excuse. Dolphin Stadium is a sutiable location, centrally located and a renewable lease.

In the time of a slumping economy, can spending tax dollars on a distant revenue really be afforded? The stadium would not be built till the year 2011, and probably would not generate a singal profit for a least 10 years later. I guess it's a good investment afforded at the expense of our childrens education.

Another loss for schools already suffering severe budget cuts, and great win for a mediocre baseball team who will never find the success it seeks.

Not Registered?

This past week I spoke to several Floridians who were not registered to vote and also had no clue of the election process. I understand politics can be boring for some but being registered to vote and being some what informed on local and national politics is crucial in such a critical election year.

Bellow is a link to the Florida Department of State Division of Elections, it' s a start. On the web page one can find election information, proposed Florida Amendments, Voter Registration instructions for those who need to register, etc......

Castro 49 and counting

To the Cuban population who reside in South Florida let's get one thing straight, Fidel Castro is not going anywhere.

This past tuesday Castro announced he would not seek re-election ( ELECTION!!!) as the leader of Cuba, paving the way for his brother Raul whom Castro appointed interim leader in 2006, to take full command... not a chance.

Fidel, until the day of his death will continue to have rule over Cuba its governmant, and people, any one who thinks not might want to read the story of Caligula. Raul is merely a puppet in which Castro knows he can use to further inflict his rule since his ailing body does not allow him the mobilty to cast his image of threat.

Unlike 2006, when rumors that Castro had died sprung mass celebration among the cuban community, people this time were more docile understanding that a changing of the tides has not yet occured. Economic reforms are not set to take place, high food prices will not drop and a Communist command will stay intact.

Word on the street in some parts of south florida are that Cubans are ready for a change, and some do see this as possibile step forward in the direction of democracy, but as is its just words. To the Cuban community keep on sipping your coffee and enjoying your croquetas the once loved Castro and his revolution are not going anywhere.

Amendement 1 reduction cuts school services.

Amendment 1, the Florida property tax reform was established to allow residents the ability to transfer tax benefits from their previous home when deciding to purchase a new one. It is to help residents with inflating costs of owning a home cut and dry. Many Floridians desperate to keep their American dream of owning a home alive favorably voted for the amendment and it passed - a win for the voters a loss for our public schools.

School boards are now set to endure major budget cuts in billions of dollars over five years to accomodate the housing break. In response broward county school officials are discussing cutting back on landscaping, the use of air conditioning, and the cleaning of bathrooms to alleviate the burden this amendment will impose.

Already suffering from the lack of educational funding, unsanitary bathrooms and cutting back on air conditioning is a discomfort children should not be subjected too.

Floridas tax housing increase importantly needed restructure, but clearly not at the expense of our children.
